DEC. 17,1981 28 Pages Today Price 10c Per Copy Weather Tuesday: high 45, low 38. hum. 56%, rain at 7 a.m. Wednesday was .40 inches. The area had a good rain. Wednesday was sunny and cool. The weatherman said that some more rain or snow was coming. The storms of approaching winter left snow, sleet and freezing rain on most of the Northeast on Tuesday. Some counties in Western North Carolina had ice and snow and the schools were closed. The United Nations General Assembly elected Javier Perez de Cuellar the fifth U. N. secretary-general Tuesday. He will be the first U. N. chief from Latin America. He succeeds Kurt Waldheim, an Austrian on Jan. 1st. Carole Marsh will autograph copies of "The Mystery of the World's Fair” and "A Fun Book of World’s Fair" today at the Book Shelf from 3:30 to 5 p.m. There will be an open house Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Years Ago Antiques. This will be an opportunity to meet the artists and craftsmen who are sharing their larger quarters. A number of special Christmas programs are planned by various Continued On Back Page Block House’ Chase Seeking Posters As an early-bird promotional for its annual springtime rite, the Tryon Riding and Hunt Club is sponsoring a poster contest to help publicize the Block House Races. The 36th running of the tradition-laden Block House Steeplechase, along with four companion races, will be held in Tryon on April 3 of next year and the organizers believe it is none too early to tell people about it. “We’re looking for two types of posters,” says club President, Gus Hoffman, “one to be in some detail and carry information that one can pause and read. The other shoud be designed to catch the eye of people in cars." The Tryon club is offering a little fame and fortune as an incentive to would-be poster creators. The winning "detail" poster will carry a prize of $100 and the best "eye-catcher” will bring $75. In addition, the two winners will each receive a reserved infield parking space which will enable them to bring a carload of friends and enjoy the races. They will also receive publicity along with their posters, to include use of one of the posters as the cover design for the race program. Deadline for poster submissions is February 15, and results will be announced shortly thereafter. In order to foster widespread interest, notices have been sent to college art Continued On Back Page PM Magazine Visits Kale Castle Kevin McKee, Lisa Clark and the entire PM Magazine crew were recent visitors and guests at the Kale Castle, home of Dr. and Mrs. Michael Kale of Landrum. The entire show, which will air January 6, was shot live and on location at the castle. All members of the Kale family were featured and will be in various spots in the show. House Burns The Landrum Volunteer Fire Department was called Sunday at 6:30 p.m. to the Broadus Hutcherson old house on Blackstock Road in the Fairview Community. The unoccupied house was engulfed in flames before the alarm was turned in. Wreck A two-vehicle accident occured Tuesday at 1:50 p.m. on Hwy. 176 near the Lanier Grocery. A Chevrolet Chevette, driven by Ms. Velma Skipper of Columbus pulled out of the Bantam Chef into the path of a blue Chevrolet Impala operated by Charles S. Smith of Landrum. Ms Skipper was injured and taken to St. Luke’s Hospital by the Polk County ambulance. Her car was totaled and about $1,000 damage was done to Mr. Smith’s car according to Highway Patrolman David Saterfield the investigating officer. Young Careerist The Thermal Belt BPW is accepting applications for "Young Careerist” candidates. She does not have to be a member of BPW, but must have been employed in business or profession at least one year and must be between the ages of 21 and 30. She must be outstanding in scholastic work, community service and/or church work. She must support the Equal Rights Amendment and support the objectives of BPW to better both the professional and personal lives of working women. She must be living, working, training or continuing her education in the area served by the Thermal Belt BPW Clubs. Nominations must be in by Jan. 10th. On The Air The 11:00 a.m. worship service of the Congregational Church will be broadcast over Station WTYN next Sunday. Mr. Jackson’s sermon topic will be "An Unexpected Gift." Mr. and Mrs. David P. Johnson and children. Wendy and Jenny from Monticello Arkansas are visiting Mr. Johnson’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. James Elliott Johnson of Brookwood Acres for Christmas week.
